This is an extract from the book Pueblo enfermo de alcides Arguedas, (1909) which is an interesting and enlightening book which has influenced my thinking about the problem of hunger and poverty. Alcides Arguedas is an author who very rarely writes about his own life. For the most part he is more concerned with the lives of the people he writes about. So when he chooses to mention his own life it is almost never in the context of his life as a writer and yet this chapter of Pueblo Enfermo is an exception. He is considered the founder of modern Bolivian ethnography and is considered one of the most important authors in Latin America during the first part of the twentieth century.
